Why are my iPhone photos HEIC?

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default — it stores the same photo at roughly half the file size of JPG. The trade-off is that most apps, websites and Windows PCs can't open HEIC, so you convert to JPG to share or edit them anywhere.

Does this keep my photo's date and location?

Yes. We read the original date, GPS location, camera make and model from each HEIC and write them back into the JPG's EXIF — and we reset the orientation flag so photos never come out sideways. Most other free converters silently strip all of this, which is why your converted photos lose their dates and stop sorting correctly.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Decoding runs in your browser using WebAssembly — your photos never leave your device and nothing is sent to a server. Note that a Live Photo's video (.MOV) can't be converted here; only the still image is converted.
